An arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that orthopedic surgeons use to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems within an injured joint. In sports medicine, an arthroscopy is often done to examine damaged joints in order to determine the next course of action. Based on the findings, a patient may require bio joint restoration, physical therapy, rest, or any combination of the three. During an arthroscopic examination, Dr. Palumbo makes a small incision in the patient’s skin, and inserts pencil-sized instruments containing a small lens to magnify and inspect the structures inside the joint. This technique allows for closer examination of the injured joint, causes less tissue trauma, results in less pain for the patient, and may promote a quicker recovery.

The small puncture incisions made during an arthroscopy can heal within days, but it may take several weeks for the joint to fully heal. During the recovery process, it may be necessary for the patient to participate in a sports rehabilitation. Dr. Palumbo and his team are experts at prescribing and executing the appropriate modalities and exercises to maximize recovery speed as well as overall joint function and strength.

It is not unusual for patients to go back to and resume daily activities within a few days after surgery. Athletes and others who are in good physical condition may in some cases return to athletic activities within a few weeks. However, each patient’s arthroscopic surgery is unique to that person, which is reflected in their recovery time.

Initially, arthroscopy was simply an investigative technique for planning; a precursor to standard open surgery. Thanks to development of better technology and surgical procedures, many conditions can be treated arthroscopically with specially designed tools that are inserted into the joint via the accessory incisions. Only highly skilled surgeons like Dr. Palumbo have the training, experience, and state of the art facilities to execute these delicate procedures. From initial consultation, to surgery, to post-op rehabilitation, Dr. Palumbo and his team have the ability to help you throughout the entire treatment process.
